We are glad to invite you to the National Seminar on ‘Kauṭilya’s Arthaśāstra – Its relevance and applicability to the modern times’ organized by the Department of Sanskrit and Philosophy of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, Belur Math, Deemed to be University declared by the Government of India under University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, under the auspices of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Project sponsored by the Government of India’s IKS Division on 6 December 2023. Prof. Sachchidanand Mishra, Member-Secretary, Indian Council of Philosophical Research, and Professor, BHU, Varanasi, has kindly consented to inaugurate the seminar and deliver the key-note address. Dr. Vinayak Rajat Bhat, Associate Professor, Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), Chanakya University, Bengaluru, will be the Guest of Honour and deliver a special address on the theme of the seminar. The detailed programme is attached herewith.

Students, research scholars, faculty and all those interested in learning more about Indian Knowledge Systems with particular reference to Kauṭilya’s Arthaśāstra are cordially invited to attend. The seminar will give a glimpse of how the Arthaśāstra, magnum opus of Chānakya (Kauṭilya) and an encylopaedia as it were on a variety of topics like statecraft, governance, health, higher values, spirituality, etc., albeit written more than three millennia ago, is still relevant and applicable to the modern times. The seminar is being organized as a part of the IKS Project bearing the same name awarded to our faculty by the IKS Division, Govt. of India.

  • 10.45 – 11.25 am: Keynote Address: Prof. Sachchidanand Mishra, Member Secretary, Indian Council of Philosophical Research, and Professor, Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi, on Kauṭalīyārthaśāstrasya Ādhunika-vidyāsu Upayogaḥ (The Relevance and Applicability of the Arthaśāstra of Kauṭilya in Modern Knowledge Systems)
  • 11.30 – 12.10 pm: Theme talk: Dr.Paromita Roy, Assistant Professor and ‘Swami Ahedananda Chair’, Department of Sanskrit and Philosophy, RKMVERI, Belur and Principal Investigator of the IKS project on the theme “The relevance and applicability of Chanakya’s (Kautilya) Arthaśāstra for solving current societal problems.”
